So, all you need to do is use the Up and Down arrows to browse through the words. The feature which I love the most is the Clipboard Search. It copies the entire contents of your clipboard to the search bar and displays the meaning. Cool, right?
Overall, the design is clever and similar to WordWeb, you can bookmark certain words.
3. Perfect Dictionary
Up next is the Perfect Dictionary. It's concise and has a bit different approach from the other apps. You'd need to download the dictionaries first, post which it'll let you search for words offline.
Perfect Dictionary plays between the free and the paid world. While the basic dictionaries like acronyms and idioms are free, you'd have to pay to get the premium dictionaries like Collins, Cambridge or MacMillan.
Another point of difference is that this app has an ad box at the bottom-right corner and it can be quite distracting. Coming to the interface, it's modern and all the sections are kept segregated.
Similar to the above apps, you can mark favorite words and the dictionary also shows word suggestions as you type.
Additional features include checking out the audio pronunciations, copy the searched word to the clipboard, among others. Other than that, you can change the theme and change the default language of the app.
Download Perfect Dictionary4. English Dictionary - Offline
Well, the name pretty much sums it all. English Dictionary is similar to the above apps. Here, you needn't download any extra dictionaries to find the meanings of words. Everything's included in the initial package that you download.
Apart from meanings, audio pronunciations and the auto-suggest feature, English Dictionary also has a clever feature named Today.
It features a couple of new words every day and even sends you notifications of the 'Word of the Day'. So, if you're looking to expand your vocabulary or you are someone who loves learning new words every day, you may find this feature useful.
The app is free to download from the Microsoft store. My only gripe about this handy app is that there's a row of ads at the bottom. However, you can remove them by upgrading it to the Premium version.
Learn as if You Were to Live Forever
Learning is a never-ending activity and a dictionary always makes the process easier. Plus, with features like Word of the Day, it's incredibly easy to expand your language skills.
In a nutshell, they are valuable learning tools. So, it's better to have at least one app as a standby, lest the internet decides to play hide and seek.

* Enable additional virtual memory.

CORRUPTED FILES IN ENCARTA WORLD ENGLISH DICTIONARY AFTER INSTALLATION
If you suspect or detect that there is a corrupted file in Encarta World English Dictionary, uninstall Encarta World English Dictionary and then reinstall.
To uninstall Encarta World English Dictionary:
1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

The best way to clean a CD is to wet a soft cloth with either window cleaner or water, and wipe from the center to the edge in a straight line only, not in a circle. If you still see an error message after checking the points above, check the manuals that came with your CD-ROM drive for information on how a CD-ROM is to be set up, or contact the company that supplied the drive.
In Windows 95/98 you can check for conflicts with your CD-ROM by clicking the My Computer icon with the right mouse button and selecting Properties. On the System Properties screen select the Device Manager tab and look for the CD-ROM in the list. If it appears with an exclamation point to the right of it, there is a conflict with the hardware setup, and you should check the manuals that came with your CD-ROM drive for information on how a CD-ROM is to be set up, or contact the company that supplied the drive.

You must log on as a user with administrative privileges in order to successfully install Encarta World English Dictionary on Windows NT. This is because Encarta World English Dictionary installation requires access to areas of the Registry that are available only to those with administrator access privileges.
If you install Encyclopedia Britannica after you install Encarta World English Dictionary, restart your computer before running Encarta World English Dictionary.

If you do not see these options in Word or PowerPoint after you have installed Encarta World English Dictionary, uninstall and reinstall Encarta World English Dictionary.
ENCARTA WORLD ENGLISH DICTIONARY FOR BOOKSHELF USERS
During installation, Encarta World English Dictionary gives the user the option to uninstall Bookshelf 99. Note that if you choose this option, the Bookshelf 99 Office Integration features (used by Word and PowerPoint) are also uninstalled. The improved version of Office Integration that is shipped with Encarta World English Dictionary will be installed regardless of whether you uninstalled Bookshelf 99 or not.
RUNNING WITH MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER
There are two ways to find definitions quickly while you work in Microsoft Internet Explorer. Select the word you would like to define and choose from the following methods:
* Right-click the Encarta Dictionary QuickShelf icon on the Windows taskbar and then click QuickDefine.

If you install Encyclopedia Britannica after you install Encarta World English Dictionary, restart your computer before running Encarta World English Dictionary.

During installation, Encarta World English Dictionary gives the user the option to uninstall Bookshelf 99. Note that if you choose this option, the Bookshelf 99 Office Integration features (used by Word and PowerPoint) are also uninstalled. The improved version of Office Integration that is shipped with Encarta World English Dictionary will be installed regardless of whether you uninstalled Bookshelf 99 or not.

There are two ways to find definitions quickly while you work in Microsoft Internet Explorer. Select the word you would like to define and choose from the following methods:
* Right-click the Encarta Dictionary QuickShelf icon on the Windows taskbar and then click QuickDefine.
The QuickDefine dialog box opens and displays the definition for the word you selected. If the word is spelled correctly QuickDefine instantly displays the word's definition. If the word is misspelled, the spelling checker appears. Click the correct word from the list and QuickDefine displays its definition.
NOTES ON NETWORKS AND SERVERS
If Encarta World English Dictionary is running across a network and the computer is suspended, Encarta World English Dictionary will not operate correctly after the computer is resumed. Encarta World English Dictionary must be closed and restarted.

ENCARTA WORLD ENGLISH DICTIONARY DISPLAY
Requirements
---------------------
Microsoft Encarta World English Dictionary requires a minimum of 640x480 resolution (800x600 recommended) and a 256-color display to run. If your computer's display is less than 256 colors, you need to install a 256-color driver, or obtain one from your video card's manufacturer.
Display Problems
---------------------
In some situations, Encarta World English Dictionary may encounter video display problems when using high-resolution video drivers from various video card manufacturers. The problems include:
* Images appearing grainy or having 'glitches.'
Most problems can be fixed by obtaining new drivers from your video card manufacturer. Contact the manufacturer of your video card to determine if there are newer versions available. You can locate their phone number within the manuals that came with your video card or personal computer.
In other cases, Encarta World English Dictionary may look bad on 256-color displays when other applications that also use 256 colors are placed over the Encarta World English Dictionary window. Some things you can do to alleviate this include:
* Run your display at a color depth greater than 256 colors.
See your video card owner's manual for directions on how to do this.
* Don't use gradient fills.
* Maximize the application window.
* Make sure you are using the latest video drivers for your display.
ENCARTA WORLD ENGLISH DICTIONARY HELP CHANGES COLORS
You may notice color changes when you have Help open and you have your monitor set to 256 colors. To fix this problem, set your monitor to a higher color resolution, such as True Color. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. In Control Panel, double-click Display. Click the Settings tab, and then choose an option for Color Palette.
FONT DISPLAY PROBLEMS
Encarta World English Dictionary installs the following TrueType fonts:
Refsan.ttf
Refspcl.ttf
Tahoma.ttf
If any of the above fonts are missing (i.e., inappropriate letters or strange symbols are displayed in place of expected characters), run the Encarta World English Dictionary Setup program and choose Remove All. Then re-run the Encarta World English Dictionary Setup program to reinstall Encarta World English Dictionary.
INSTALLING ENCARTA WORLD ENGLISH DICTIONARY HD ON A COMPRESSED DRIVE
When installing Encarta World English Dictionary HD on a compressed drive you may get an 'Unable to write to file' error. This may indicate that you do not have enough disk space to complete the install. Either free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files, or try installing Encarta World English Dictionary HD to a different drive.
Also, installing Encarta World English Dictionary HD on a compressed drive will take longer than installing it on an uncompressed drive (about twice as long).
